The world's first Viking town

Ribe is the world's first Viking town - no less. This is where the world of the Vikings began around the year 700. And through what we now call the Viking Age, Ribe develops into a hub for trade between vikings and the rest of the world.

At Ribe Viking Museum you get the whole story of the beginning of the Viking Age - right here, where it took place.

The wild Vikings?

When you think of Vikings, do you picture bloodthirsty warriors on raids?

The world of the Vikings in Ribe was not like that. Ribe was a place where Vikings from near and far met to trade peacefully and all kinds of goods from the cold north and the warm south changed hands - before being spread across the continent.

Learn the story of Ribe's enormous importance for trade across Europe - and see some of the amazing goods traded in the Viking Age in Ribe.

Odin from Ribe is one of the most unique and enigmatic objects in the Ribe Viking Museum. It probably depicts Odin with a big beard and the ravens Hugin and Munin. But whether it's a piece of jewelry, a buckle or something else entirely is a bit of a mystery. What do you think the story is?

Glass beads were one of the most coveted jewelry items of the Viking Age - and in 8th century Ribe, hundreds of thousands of beads were produced. Beadmakers reused old glass from the Roman Empire.

Before Ribe, there was no coin economy in Denmark. Ribe is the first town in Scandinavia to have its own coin - and foreign merchants must exchange the coins they bring with them in order to trade in the town. On the obverse of the coin is a face, perhaps of a Danish king. On the reverse is an animal looking backwards.

The bronze casters in Ribe were renowned for their skill, casting the finest jewelry and objects that they sold to traders from near and far. This beautiful bowl clasp, once part of a pair, held up a Viking woman's harness dress.
